Caitlyn Jenner has appeared to suggest violence against transgender people in the United States was less of an issue when compared to other nations.

Speaking with the US ambassador to the United Nations Samantha Power, her comments feature in an eight-minute video published to Power’s Facebook page on Thursday night, where the pair met during the observance of International Human Rights Day, reports The Advocate.

Power praised the “great Caitlyn Jenner” for her advocacy work, and said her coming out journey had “changed” and “touched so many lives”.

“LGBT rights are human rights”, said Power.

“We have tried here at the United Nations, so hard, to lift up LGBT rights. We’ve made some progress, but I confess the road ahead of us is long.”

“We got to start somewhere. You don’t win the race if you don’t start it,” said Jenner.

Jenner said trans rights were “an issue without borders”. “This is humanity, this is part of humanity,” she said.

But it may appear Jenner put her foot in it with her next statement, when she appeared to downplay transgender issues in the United States.

“If you look at issues on a worldwide basis, I’m pretty comfortable with the issues here in the United States, we have come a long way, we have a long way to go ” she said.

“You’re helping,” Power said.

In the United States trans American citizens can still be fired for coming out, cannot change their identity documents to match their authentic identity, and in some districts such as Houston are banned from using public bathrooms.

“But if you look at this on an international level, these issues are huge. I mean, people are murdered, killed, hung over this issue, and it just doesn’t have to be that way,” said Jenner.

Later in the video, Power spoke with Jenner about the “no-go zones” facing LGBT and trans people, who could not travel safely without fear of violence or oppression.

Jenner added she was also in talks with companies to raise money to form a foundation with a global reach to make a difference to the lives of transgender people.
