Watch: Why religion can never be an excuse for homophobia
By Will Stroude
On the latest episode of Last Week Tonight, comedian and presenter John Oliver has an eye-opening segment on the lack of LGBT rights in the United States despite the recent introduction of same-sex marriage, and launches into an amazingly on-point rant about why religion can never be an excuse for homophobia.
“In 31 states in America people are at risk of being fired, evicted or refused service just because they’re gay,” he explains.
“While Federal law may guarantee a gay couples right to get married it, offers zero guarantee about their rights to do the things that follow that.”
He goes on to take aim a anti-gay businesses like the Oregon Bakery, who cite their right to religious freedom as an excuse to not serve LGBT people, telling them: “The constitution isn’t the star in Super Mario Brothers. It doesn’t make you invincible so you can do whatever the fuck you want”.
