What percentage of the UK describe themselves as gay, lesbian or bi?

1.6% of the British populations describes themselves at either lesbian, gay or bisexual, official figures published today have shown.

In a new survey published today (October 1), the Office for National Statistics found that 1.1% of the population self-identified as gay or lesbian, with another 0.5% describing themselves as bisexual.

London had nearly twice the number of people who described themselves as LBG than other parts of the Britain, at 2.6%, the Evening Standard reports.

The next highest figure was in the South East region, where the total as 1.8% while the lowest proportion was recorded in the East Midlands, at just 1%.

The findings, which were taken from a household survey carried out last December, also showed that the proportion of LGB people is higher among ‘professionals’ such as doctors and lawyers than manual worker, with the proportion standing at 2.1% 1.4% respectively.

A 2013 estimate places the UK population at around 64.1 million, meaning according to there figures there are just over a million people in Britain who self-identify as LGB.
