Zoe Saldana: Dolce & Gabbana boycott ‘the stupidest thing’

By Attitude Magazine

While celebrities from Elton John to Madonna, from Martina Navratilova to Ricky Martin have joined the chorus denouncing Italian fashion designers Dolce & Gabbana over their anti-gay parenting comments, one star has announced she won’t be joining the boycott.

Avatar actress Zoe Saldana told E! News at the GLAAD Awards over the weekend that the designers’ inflammatory comments about same-sex families – including dubbing IVF babies “synthetic children” – had not influenced her decision to buy the brand.

“No! Not at all, that would be the stupidest thing if it affected my fashion choice,” she said.

“People are allowed to their own opinion, however, I wouldn’t have chosen to be so public about something that’s such a personal thing. Obviously it caused some sensitivity, but then again if you continue to follow the news, you see they all kinda hugged it out, so why are we making a big deal about it?”

The 36-year-old, who has an Italian husband, also said that statements can often get lost in translation.

Saldana’s certainly going out on a limb – so far, perhaps the only other well-known person to publicly support the design duo has been British columnist Katie Hopkins, who defended their right to free speech and bemoaned the “need for consensus” from those offended by their comments.
