Hairstyle inspiration from the red carpets of awards season
Jason Collier's hairs tips from Hollywood will leave you looking your best for Valentine's Day
Each month, celebrity hairstylist and Attitude Hair and Grooming expert Jason Collier is sharing his wealth of experience to help keep you looking razor-sharp and ready for any occasion…
Whether you are in a long-standing relationship and set aside a regular time to catch up every week from busy lives, are in the throes of a new romance or currently looking for ‘the one’, we all want to look our best when date night comes around.
The super-glamorous 75th annual Golden Globes took place in Beverly Hills, California, in January to celebrate the movies, directors and actors that stood out in 2017 and the red carpet was full of hair and style inspiration. Although black was the dominant colour at the event this year – part of the protest in support in the fight against sexual harassment within the film industry – there was still plenty of style tips to be taken from those A-listers walking the red-carpet walk.
With all those black suits around, there was a real feel of early James Bond styling – sleek, confident, tailored and not a hair out of place. The Crown’s Matt Smith rocked a Burberry tuxedo teamed a white shirt, with hair that ticked all the suave style boxes without looking overdone. To recreate the look, you need to keep hair longer on top, with a deep left-hand parting and hair combed over to the side before creating a bit of height on top. Y
You’ll need a small amount of paste or pomade to hold things in place – you don’t want anything too slick here. I’ve been trialling the new House 99 by David Beckham range and I think the Seriously Groomed Beard and Hair Balm would be perfect for the job – keep the sideburns long for the perfect finishing touch.
Working a smart but ever-so-slightly more casual vibe, former Homeland star Timothee Chalamet, who earned a nomination for coming-of-age drama Call Me By Your Name, wore a single-breasted Berluti suit teamed with a dark shirt. His hairstyle is more rugged and sexy, with a natural curl adding to the textured appearance.
This is the ideal look for guys with a wave in their hair. Keep hair well conditioned – if you have curly hair, it tends to dry out more than straight hair and needs more hydration – and use a texturising product when your hair is damp; the end result should be slightly messy but still controlled.
Singer Nick Jonas looked very cool in Versace for his first Golden Globe nomination, with his short thick hair closely cropped in to the sides, leaving just a bit of length on top, which was swept back and to the side. A neat look for thicker hair that can be unruly, use wax, cream or pomade to hold this in place, depending on the finish you want – it should look short, controlled and as natural as possible.
Zac Efron wore Hugo Boss with his thick hair combed up and over into a short pompadour. Classic and timeless, this look works well for both formal and informal occasions. You need to have enough length on top for this style to work though. Hair is kept short on the sides with length left on top, which is then swept up and back. Use House 99 by David Beckham Smooth-Back-Shaping Pomade when styling to give height and add a bit of shine.
Forgetting about longer hair, Justin Timberlake in his Dior suit showed that a well-executed buzzcut never goes out of style. This was a close crop all over with hair graduating down to a well-groomed beard. Definitely one for anybody concerned about a receding hairline. He wasn’t the only star sporting facial hair: rapper Common teamed his shaved head with a well-shaped beard, while Aaron Taylor Johnson, Kit Harington and Ewan McGregor all stepped out with groomed facial hair. Keep your beard looking sharp and cared-for; I really enjoy using Braw Beard Oils’ range of beard oils and butters to keep my facial hair in check.
We may not all be able to live a celebrity lifestyle, but at least we can pick and choose what we like from their A-list styling…
