Boyzone: ‘We toured too soon after Gateley’s death’

By Sam Rigby

Boyzone have admitted that they toured too soon following the death of bandmate Stephen Gateley.

Mikey Graham said that the group weren’t “emotionally stable enough” to cope with the tour, which began just 16 months after Gateley’s death in October 2009.

He said on This Morning: “It was too early for us to go out. I don’t think we were emotionally stable enough to go out on that tour.

“We hadn’t really gone through the grieving process enough. We hadn’t received counselling or the stuff that we should have done for such a great loss.

“And I think that tour kind of brought an awful lot of that out in each one of us. We missed him so much… it was too early,” he added.

The group toured the UK late last year with their BZ20 tour to mark their 20th anniversary in music.

Keith Duffy said: “The [timing] feels better now. The first time out was always going to be difficult.

“Getting the timing of that right was always going to be difficult, so we got that tough part out of the way and our more recent tour was fantastic – we still talk about Steo on tour.”

They will perform a series of outdoor concerts in the UK this summer.
