Arctic Monkeys and One Direction were the big winners at the 2014 BRIT Awards tonight (February 19).

The Do I Wanna Know? band took home British Group and the prestigious British Album of the Year prize for AM.

Accepting the award for British Group, frontman Alex Turner joked that he had placed a bet of £15 on One Direction to win the award.

Meanwhile, One Direction won Best British Video, after topping a public vote on Twitter this evening. They also won the Global Success Award for the second year running.

Harry Styles was notably absent from the line-up as they took to the stage to pick up their first award, but reappeared midway through their acceptance speech.

“Sorry, I was just having a wee. The toilets are miles away in this place. What did we win?” he said.

David Bowie and Ellie Goulding were the winners in the British solo categories, with Ellie performing her hit singles I Need Your Love and Burn later in the ceremony.

Model Kate Moss attended the awards on behalf of Bowie wearing an original Ziggy Stardust stage outfit from 1972.

Bastille won British Breakthrough Act and Rudimental’s Waiting All Night was named Best British Single.

In the international categories, it was Bruno Mars, Lorde and Daft Punk that were victorious.

James Corden hosted this year’s ceremony, but will be replaced after five years in the role in 2015.
