COS launch capsule collection with Agnes Martin
By Josh Lee
Having collaborated with the world-renowned Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum in New York, COS, as sponsor of the museum’s major retrospective of American painter Agnes Martin (1912 – 2004), will celebrate the partnership by creating a capsule collection consisting of 12 pieces for men and women inspired by Martin’s works.
One of the unsurpassed painters of the twentieth century, Agnes Martin was a visionary artist. Her work bridged the Abstract Expressionist and Minimalist movements. Martin, well known for her use of delicate colour palette, geometric lines and grids has been a muse for the COS design team for many years.
The textile prints perpetuated throughout the collection have been developed by the COS design team, each one a reference to a specific piece of Agnes Martin’s work. The collection features muted colours and natural fabrics such as linen and canvas to re-imagine her compositions. The quiet, organic, irregularity demonstrated in Martin’s works has been upheld with checks and stripes, which are hand-drawn and hand-stitched. The silhouettes and shapes of the collection are loose-fitting, with finishes inspired by work wear, as worn by the artist herself.
The COS x Agnes Martin collection is available from October 7th at the Guggenheim Museum Store and selected COS stores worldwide, with a percentage of the proceeds from COS stores being donated to the Agnes Martin Foundation.
The Agnes Martin exhibition is also on view at the Guggenheim Museum from October 7th 2016 – January 11th 2017.
