So it’s finally here- the much anticipated first collection by Diesel’s Artistic Director, Nicola Formichetti.

To celebrate his first anniversary at the iconic brand, Nicola (and Diesel) took everyone to Venice- home of canals, carnivals and pleasure and produced a collection that had the versatility of drawing inspiration from the 35 year archive whilst firmly moving forward creatively.

Nicola said “This collection is a foundational collection. We are re-looking at our iconic pieces and the themes and spirit of Diesel; looking at what we essentially are and what we stand for, and then looking at where we are going to…”

The show is built upon three timeless Diesel icons that are intrinsic to the Diesel DNA today: ‘Leather-Rock ‘n’ Roll,’ ‘Denim’ and ‘Military-utility.’
…And because this is Nicola Formichetti, it wasn’t just a plain old fashion show- Films from photography/film maverick Nick Knight, live performance from Brooke Candy, singing her new song Opulence.

The collection continues the mantra of Formichetti since he first started of re looking at iconic pieces that epitomise the spirit of diesel, whilst simultaneously move the brand forward.

We grabbed the fashion wizard himself to ask him a few questions:

What was your inspiration for this season?
This collection is the foundation collection for my vision of Diesel in the future, we looked at the 3 core elements of the Diesel DNA : Denim / Leather / military. It was a quite instinctive approach, an honest one in unisex equal way for things I like that are at the core of Diesel such as a pair a jeans, a leather jacket and a military parka.

Where are you planning to take things next?
It’s going to be all about the rediscovery of Diesel more than anything.

We’ve noticed that you love a hashtag, and also using smart phones for photo shoots-are you planning any more interactions with social media?
For sure, for me social media are part of my daily life, I don’t plan it or see it as another side but It’s not only about technology it has to be a balance between the physical and the digital world.

What would the gay man love from the collection?
Probably the same pieces that I love !!

What’s your favourite piece?
I love the Venice souvenir items (hoodies & sweatshirts ) for men and women. It’s like a postcard from Venice, I love that the collection has a sense of place.

You love pandas, any chance of sneaking in any into future collections with Diesel?
Not sure yet, we never know but yeah Pandas are a real personal thing for me.
