George Michael has scored his seventh number one album in the UK.

His latest effort Symphonica debuts at number one this week, beating Kylie Minogue’s Kiss Me Once to the top spot by over 20,000 copies.

Symphonica is the singer’s first studio release since his 2004 double-platinum-selling album Patience.

Speaking to OfficialCharts.com about the good news, Michael said: “Thank you so much! Symphonica is at this moment sitting at Number 1 in the UK, and it’s so nice to be able to savour this wonderful moment. I am a lucky man!”

Kylie’s twelfth studio album Kiss Me Once debuts at number two. The Aussie singer was 8,500 copies behind George Michael on Wednesday, and fell further behind the Faith star as the week went on.

Kylie has has notched up five UK number one albums over the course her 27-year recording career, the most recent being 2010′s Aphrodite. Her new single Into the Blue failed to make the UK top ten on last week’s singles chart (March 16), making it her worst-performing lead single since 1997.

Elsewhere on the UK’s Official Albums Chart, former Westlife member Kian Egan, whom we recently interviewed, manages to grab a top ten spot with his first solo effort Home, landing at nine. Glee star Lea Michele enters at 16 with her debut album Louder.
