Gogglebox’s Stephen Webb talks wedding plans and why it’s all about the rings

Just months after his partner in crime Chris Steed revealed that he would be getting married, Gogglebox’s Stephen Webb announced his own happy engagement news in January this year.

and he is set to wed his partner, Daniel Lustig, next year.

45-year-old Stephen met his fiancé, 40-year-old Daniel Lustig, three years ago as they were both in line waiting at Hove Town Hall to buy parking permits. It was love at first sight, as they say, and the pair started dating immediately before moving in together after eight months.

Stephen and Daniel got engaged back in January at the TV personality’s favourite place on Earth: India. With the lovebirds set to tie the knot next year, Stephen recently sat down with Attitude’s James Jefferson to talk wedding themes, tips for future proposers and why he always dreamed of marriage.

Did you ever think you would get married?

I knew I was gay from like 12, but didn’t come out ‘till my 20’s, I never thought I was going to come out, let alone get married! Once I moved to London, you know I think I came screaming out.

So what made you change your mind?

The more I thought about it, the more I just thought ‘yeah, it’s our rights isn’t it’? If I was going to do it, I didn’t want a civil partnership. If everyone else is entitled to marriage, that’s what I wanted. It had to be marriage.

What’s the plan for the wedding?

We’re actually going to get married in our friend’s garden, and have a big marquee with Indian furniture, cushions and stuff like that. Obviously India means a lot to us, it’s my favourite place and it’s where we got engaged so the theme would also mean a lot.

And, out of the two of you, who’s organising the big day?

Daniel is definitely more in charge; he’s more organised than I am, so yeah he will probably do most of it. We are still yet to set a date, but hoping for next September. So we’ve got a good year to start planning.”

What are your plans for the stag do?

I think we are just going to go out for a really nice meal and celebrate like that, nothing too hectic, we are too old.

Since India still outlaws homosexuality, how did people there react to the engagement?

We posted pictures up of ourselves on Twitter and our Indian followers retweeted it. It also got into the LGBT Indian press!

And lastly, what’s your advice to future proposers?

The rings, it’s all about the rings, we got princess cut diamond rings and they are really nice. You’ve got to dig as deep as you can to find out what your partner wants. Before I proposed, and when we were talking about getting married, Daniel said, ‘Oh, I’m not sure I’ll have a ring’ and I had just spent £1000’s. But don’t worry as soon as he clocked eyes on it, he was like, ‘Yeah, I love it’.”
