London Collections: Men, powered by Renault (Day 3)

By Joseph Kocharian

Day 3 of LC:M started bright and early at J.W Anderson at his familiar haunt at Russell Square. J.Dubs streamed his show live on social media app Grindr. The collection cosmic snail prints, S&M style collars  mixed in with iridescent sheeny fabrics, cropped jackets and sportier elements there was ample detail and exploration with this collection.

We then headed to James Long and arrived at the same time as Tom Daley and Dustin Lance Black, who ended up being seated on the same section of the Frow as us. Tom told us that he was having a brief pit stop from training for his show in Rio 2016. The collection was busy in a great way, with a wealth of multicoloured stripes in an array of textures and width, mixed in with leopard prints, lurex and shearlings and patches on outerwear, sweatshirts and tracksuit pants  to bring a fantastic orderly dichotomy to proceedings. Long stayed true to his core customer with the likes of sweatshirts, knit and shearlings too. Sportier lux touches and stomping striped Louboutins with red souls brought the collection a perfect finishing touch.

Alexander McQueen  transported us to an idylic natural history lesson at the Foreign Office at Dunbar court, where the soundof birds and tropical humid fog swirled around the high ceiling-ed hall. Burton, taking reference from Charles Darwin’s theory of natural selection, adorned man yof the looks with butterfly motifs as well as floral prints, embellishing and printing them on many of the garments. Nature was matched with a Victorian military with red military coats, tails and plenty of flourishes including black beading, gilding, piping, embroidery and metallic complete with deconstructed finishes, loose fabric trousers,  fraying and punky safety pins to keep things a little bit rebellious, which we always like to see from McQueen . Amongst the fog, a grand piano was played, Sarah Burton provided a beautiful, considered and fantastical journey for us.

For a completely different change of pace, we next headed to 1 Mayfair (the location of our inaugural Attitude Awards) for the Moschino Jeremy’s Scott spectacle.  Scott consulted with artists Gilbert & George and pulled from their archive and incorporated super saturated explosive colours. A slew of models hit the runway ( Cover Star Tyler Maher, attitude favourites, Nathaniel Visser, Christian Williams and Dan Hyman) and celebrity models Jourdan Dunn, Rob Evans with Lucky Blue Smith closing the show.  They all  wore an explosion of  Nu Rave neons. Paint was splattered on sunglasses, jeans, hair and earlobes, with plenty of graffiti and bright and bold patterns.  Scott is never one to to be shy with his clothes, and he does more is more perfectly by adding ties, shirts, skirts and jeans to outerwear all in bright clashing glory. There was a riot of colours with hoodies, skirts, kilts and  with bells and whistles all attached, all complete with stomping boots and creepers, all as the models worked under a giant Moschino stained glass window. It was just what you wanted from a Moschino show.

Next up was Chester Barrie, who had laid out the red carpet at the Waldorf. The Designers, who have officially dressed the Olivier Awards for several years showed why they are the best qualified to do so, producing a slick selection of evening wear. KTZ gave us plenty in their show, with over-sized baseball stitching, along with bats and helmets to keep the theme authentic. Bright baseball reds, and grass greens worked well with the signature monochrome to really elevate the collection and give it a fresh edge. Our final stop was to River Island, where we were treated to three fashion films, by Lou Dalton, Martine Rose and  Man About Town (and also ran into former Attitude cover star and the world’s hottest maths teacher-turned-model, Pietro Boselli). Watch this space for those videos, as some of them are rather provocative…
