Madonna: ‘Dad asked, do you have to masturbate onstage?’
By Nick Levine
Madonna has revealed that it has taken her father three decades to “come to terms” with her often controversial artistic choices.
The singer’s provocative stage antics have played a key part in her attaining the title “the Queen of Pop”, and during her ‘Blond Ambition World Tour’ of 1990, she famously simulated masturbation on stage while performing Like a Virgin.
In her forthcoming joint interview with Katy Perry in V Mag, Madonna recalls how she would try to explain her envelope-pushing moments to her father, Tony Ciccone.
“I would always say, ‘Dad, I’m an artist, I have to express myself. You don’t understand,” Madonna says.
“I think he’s finally come to terms with it. It’s only taken 30 years. He’s like, ‘Do you have to simulate masturbation on the bed? Do you have to?’ ‘Yes, Dad, I do.'”
“I haven’t gone that far yet,” Perry then says of simulating masturbation during a performance, before adding with a nod to Madonna: “But maybe under your great mentorship I might reach that point.”
Madonna and Katy Perry’s issue of V Mag goes on sale in the US next Monday (May 26).
