Popular cosmetic surgery for men
By Matt Wells
In 2013 the cosmetic surgery industry experienced a healthy increase in the amount of male patients looking to enhance their appearance. 2014 predictions suggest the surge in guys seeking surgery is set to perform the same as last year due to various factors arguably including accessibility, the media and our nations desire to look ‘perfect’.
According to Baaps, men had 9.5% of all cosmetic surgery procedures carried in 2013. Whilst the figure is relatively small it’s a 16% increase from 2012. Surgeons are finding men are being more open about surgery and the more it becomes ‘the norm’, the more likely guys are going to opt for it. Across the board, there was a 41% rise in liposuction procedures last year. Liposuction ranked the fourth most popular procedure to have for men in 2013.
Despite the reports on the popularity of liposuction, the results fail to break down which of the three main types of liposuction were carried out; traditional liposuction, Vaser Lipo or Laser Lipo. Out of the three, Vaser Lipo and Laser Lipo tend to be more popular with men as they are less invasive than traditional liposuction. Traditional liposuction is aimed at patients who want large quantities of fat removing (up to 5 litres), Vaser Lipo is for patients who wish to remove up to 4 litres of fat without a general anaesthetic and Laser Lipo is for patients who want a speedy recovery and the least invasive procedure; only 2 litres of fat can be removed through this procedure. Whilst each procedure is very popular amongst our female counterparts, liposuction is becomingly increasingly popular for us guys who can’t shift stubborn areas on our bodies.
We’ve spotted a particular case study focusing on Mathew Blighton, aged 39, who visited MYA for Vaser Lipo on his flanks. After losing over 4 stone through exercising and diet, Mathew found he was left with stubborn areas that wouldn’t disappear despite regular exercise. After undergoing the procedure Mathew stated: “I’m so glad I found a way to make things better – I feel much more confident in my clothes and in everyday life.” He feels there’s no reason why a man should shy away from having surgery if he feels it’s needed; it’s nothing to be ashamed of and it can have a positive impact on your life.
