Sara Bareilles’s gay rights anthem ‘Brave’ gets UK release
By Nick Levine
Sara Bareilles is to release her gay rights anthem Brave in the UK on March 23.
The song, a hit in the US last year, was written for a friend of Bareilles’s who was struggling with coming out of the closet.
Bareilles co-wrote it with Jack Antonoff from We Are Young hitmakers Fun., who has described the song as “a civil rights anthem in a time when there are no civil rights anthems and there’s a giant need for [one]”.
Discussing the song’s message, Bareilles has said: “I was really ignited by gay rights and getting gay marriage supported. But the song took on a life of its own and I’ve received so much of people sharing their stories.”
Brave is taken from the singer’s latest album The Blessed Unrest, which is getting a re-release in the UK on May 26.
Bareilles, 34, from California, is best known in the UK for her 2008 single Love Song, which peaked at Number Four on the UK’s Official Singles Chart.
