Scottish Ballet – MC14/22 (Ceci est mon corps) and Emergence at Sadler’s Wells, London, 7 – 10 June
By Ross Semple
Sensuality, brutality and spellbinding spectacle – Scottish Ballet’s double bill at Sadler’s Wells offers all this and more.
Following rave reviews at Edinburgh International Festival 2016, Scottish Ballet brings two major contemporary dance works – MC14/22 (Ceci est mon corps) by Angelin Preljocaj and Emergence by Crystal Pite – to London from 7 – 10 June.
A hymn to the male body, MC14/22 is a powerfully sensual and passionate work that puts side by side the glorification of strength and the condemnation of force. Created for twelve male dancers, it evokes biblical imagery as the dancers surrender to both tender care and wretched cruelty.
MC14/22 will be performed alongside Emergence by Crystal Pite. In Emergence, the 38-strong corps de ballet are transformed into a swarming horde of insects. Prepare to be mesmerised as Scottish Ballet takes you on a journey into a subterranean hive where classical ballet transforms into insect-like behaviour.
Scottish Ballet is Scotland’s national dance company. The performances at Sadler’s Wells come hot on the heels of Scottish Ballet’s critically-acclaimed USA tour, which included the Company’s first ever performances in New York.
