Table for Two | ‘My stepdad would get on better with him’

By Will Stroude

Why did you decide to go on a blind date? Ben:

It was something I’d never tried before and Grindr wasn’t exactly offering up someone my mum would like to meet. I agreed to the blind date and then panicked about it after, but it was a ‘why the hell not’ decision.

Sam: I decided to try a blind date because I have never done anything like that before and it sounded very interesting. If you don’t buy a ticket, you can’t win the lottery.

What were your first impressions?

Ben: He was very polite and well spoken, and seemed very calm (which was nice considering I arrived at the table a bag of flustered nerves).

Sam: My first impressions were that he was a lot taller than me which I am not used to. He had a nice smile and came across really well, quite calm and mild mannered.

How was the conversation and what did you talk about?

Ben: The conversation flowed easily and without any major silences. We spoke about general things, like background and job, which led into talking about personal interests and travelling. I learned a lot about him, which was nice.

Sam: The conversation was good, it flowed throughout the whole evening and we spoke about the normal things of work, social life, interests, being gay and coming out and past relationships etc. We covered quite a range of things which was nice.

Any awkward moments?

Ben: None! I had a panic about 20 minutes in when I thought I had forgotten his name, but it turns out the waiter hadn’t introduced us and we hadn’t mentioned names when we sat down.

Sam: The only half awkward moment was when we both couldn’t remember each other’s names about 15 minutes into the date. Mainly because we hadn’t actually introduced ourselves properly.

How was the food?

Ben: Amazing – really good. I especially liked our trio of steaks.

Sam: The food was incredible, even the surprise presence of raw fish that was related to the tuna family and is shot through the head to keep it unblemished, as we were kindly informed by the waiter. The best food I have had in any restaurant.

Snog, marry, avoid?

Ben: Snog, although Sam would probably be good marriage material.

Sam: Snog

Would your mum like him?

Ben: My mum would probably like him, although it would be my stepdad that would get on better with him, if not just for their interests in sports.

Sam: I would say she would like him.

Will you see each other again?

Ben: Who knows!? We didn’t exchange numbers or talk about meeting up again, but I’d definitely go for another drink with him even if just as friends.

Sam: We actually didn’t talk about meeting up again, but for me it would only be as friends.
