Tom Daley and Greg Louganis pose for historic picture together in Rio

The Rio 2016 Games have already made history for having the highest number of openly LGBT athletes in Olympic history, and another touching moment has been marked by two of sport’s most prominent gay competitors.

Fresh of his bronze medal finish in the men’s 3m synchro with Daniel Goodfellow earlier his week, Team GB’s Tom Daley took some time before next week’s men’s 10 individual competition to pose for a historic picture with retired Olympic champion diver Greg Louganis.

Louganis, who won four Olympic gold medals at the 1984 and 1988 Olympics, came out publicly as gay in 1995 during an interview with Barbara Walters, in which he also discussed being HIV positive.

The move immediately made him one of the world’s most famous openly gay athletes, while his candid discussion of his HIV status helped to tackle stigma at a time when fear surrounding the virus was still widespread.

The 56-year-old first met Daley during the former Splash! host’s time on the junior diving circuit, and was quick to sing his praises back in 2014, shortly after the 22-year-old revealed that he was in a relationship with now-fiancé Dustin Lance Black.

“I just adored the kid,” Louganis said Daley. “He’s a kind soul, wonderful to all of his fans. Appreciative. A really sweet guy.”
