Vile homophobic chant lyrics circulated before West Ham V Chelsea match
By Josh Lee
A lyric sheet featuring homophobic lyrics aimed at Chelsea captain John Terry was circulated prior to their match with West Ham last night, the Mirror reports.
Pictures of the flyer, which circulated on social media, were aimed at whipping up tension between the two teams’ fans. The lyrics read:
John Terry’s queer,
He takes it up the rear,
He loves to sit on costas [sic] face,
He takes it up the bum,
He’s just a Chelsea Scum,
We’ve got Demitri Payet
West Ham have since launched an investigation into the homophobic song sheet, with a spokesperson commenting: “West Ham United are completely and utterly committed to tackling all forms of discrimination in football.
“Working with the Metropolitan Police Service, the club will be investigating the alleged distribution of these flyers, and will take the strongest possible action against those responsible.”
Meanwhile, a recent report by Stonewall found that 72% of fans had heard anti-LGBT chants during matches, while around 12% of fans (up to 20% for fans in the 18-24 age bracket) would be ashamed if they’re favourite player came out), suggesting that a vocal minority are propagating a culture of anti-LGBT abuse and sentiment.
