Welsh universities team up with Stonewall to stamp out homophobia in sport

Cardiff and Swansea University have partnered with Stonewall in an effort to stamp out homophobia in sport.
Hundreds of students from both universities will wear rainbow laces supplied by Stonewall Cymru during their activities in order to voice their support for LGBT players and show that sport should be inclusive of all, regardless of sexuality.
“It’s great news that both Team Cardiff and Swansea’s ‘Green & White Army’ have stepped up to challenge homophobia, biphobia and transphobia in sport,” said Luke Young, Campaigns Manager, Stonewall Cymru.
“By wearing Rainbow laces at the Welsh Varsity, Cardiff and Swansea students are sending a powerful message that a player’s sexual orientation or gender identity should not be a barrier to taking part and that sport must be open to all.”
Bryn Griffiths, Athletic Union President, Cardiff University Students’ Union added:
“Varsity 2015 will undoubtedly be the climax of the year for Team Cardiff and we’re proud to show our commitment in challenging homophobia, biphobia and transphobia, showing it’s OK to be ‘Out In Sport’. We are working with Swansea University and Stonewall Cymru to help break down some of the barriers that make LGBT students feel excluded oruncomfortable participating in sport.”
The Rainbow Laces campaign has been hugely successful since it was launched by the LGBT charity, with support flooding in from celebrities including former Attitude cover star Gareth Thomas, Stephen Fry and Thomas Hitzlsperger.
