Former X Factor contestant Ruth Lorenzo is to represent Spain at this year’s Eurovision Song Contest.

The singer was one of five acts competing to become Spain’s 2014 entrant – and emerged victorious in a close final on Spanish TV last night (February 22).

Lorenzo will perform her original track Dancing In The Rain, which is sung half in Spanish, half in English, at the much-loved singing competition, which takes place in Copenhagen, Denmark on May 10. Spain last won Eurovision back in 1969.

The Spanish singer finished in fifth place on The X Factor in 2008, where she was mentored by judge Dannii Minogue and became known for her belting rendition of Prince’s Purple Rain. She competed on the show that year against the likes of Alexandra Burke and JLS.

Last year (2013), Lorenzo penned a track that featured on Minogue’s Australia-only Best of album, and also released her own single titled The Night, which failed to chart in the UK.
