Beyoncé leads the pack as 2017 Grammy Award nominations are announced

The 2017 Grammy nominations have been released today (December 6) with Beyoncé clocking up a spectacular nine nods, including the most coveted awards, Record of the Year for Formation, Album of the Year for Lemonade, and Song of the Year for Formation.

The 35-year-old’s nine nominations bring her total to 60 – maintaining her record as the most nominated woman in Grammy history – while this year she becomes the first artist ever to earn nominations in the pop, rock, R&B and rap categories in the same year.

The icon’s genre-busting sixth album Lemonade has seen her reach out into some more surprising categories this year, including Best Rock Performance for Don’t Hurt Yourself ft. Jack White.

Following Beyoncé are Drake, Rihanna and Kanye West with eight nominations apiece, Chance the Rapper with seven, and Adele with five, including Record of the Year for Hello and Album of the Year for 25. The pair share a history of Grammy success, both hold the record for most Grammys won by a woman in one night – six.

Rihanna fans were shocked to see the singer miss out on an Album of the Year nod for Anti – however, she’s in the running for Record of the Year for Work ft. Drake, and has a number of nominations in R’n’B specific fields.

Another controversial ommission from the Album of the Year nominations list is David Bowie’s final album Blackstar, which was tipped for a posthumous nomination after he died from cancer in January 2016.
