Macklemore’s ‘Same Love’ up for ‘Song of the Year’ at 2014 Grammy Awards

Same Love has been nominated for ‘Song of the Year’ at the 2014 Grammy Awards.
The track, which supports the legalisation of gay marriage, features Mary Lambert and has enjoyed huge chart success in the US and UK.
Same Love will compete against Pink’s Just Give Me A Reason, Katy Perry’s Roar, Royals by Lorde and Locked Out Of Heaven by Bruno Mars for the prize at a ceremony in Los Angeles on January 26.
Speaking about the song earlier this year, Macklemore – real name Ben Haggerty – told The Independent on Sunday that he was inspired by his gay uncles and gay godfather.
“I was really nervous to play it for them. It’s obviously a very personal song, and I didn’t want to cross any boundaries in terms of their privacy,” he recalled. “But we actually ended up taking a picture of them and using it as the cover art for the single. I wanted the art to reflect how personal the song was, and they are a big reason why I’m so passionate about the issue.”
Same Love’s nomination is just one of seven nods for the duo, who have enjoyed worldwide success with their debut album The Heist.
The track peaked at number 6 on the UK Top 40 and charted at number 11 on the US Billboard Hot 100. This September it won the MTV Video Music Award for ‘Best Video with a Message’.
Jay Z leads this year’s Grammy nominations with recognitions in nine categories, while Justin Timberlake, Kendrick Lamar and Pharrell Williams follow with seven nominations apiece.
The 2014 Grammy Awards will take place on January 26, 2014 at the Staples Center in Los Angeles.
