‘Queer Eye for the Straight Guy’ is being rebooted by Netflix
Those in need of a ‘make-better’, get ready: Queer Eye for the Straight Guy is coming back to screens.
The iconic ’00s reality TV show, which aired for five seasons on Bravo between 2003-07 and saw a team of five gay men give fashion and lifestyle makeovers to a series of hapless straight men, is returning for a “reimagined” run on Netflix, Entertainment Weekly reports.
The original ‘Fab Five’, Ted Allen, Kyan Douglas, Thom Filicia, Carson Kressley and Jai Rodriguez, will be replaced by a new bunch of gurus, while the show will swap its original setting of New York for a tour of redneck states in Donald Trump’s America.
“In a time when America stands divided and the future seems uncertain, a team of five brave men will try to bring us closer together with laughter, heart, and just the right amount of moisturiser,” produces said in a statement.
“The Emmy Award-winning Queer Eye is back and ready to Make America Fabulous Again. With a new Fab 5 and the show’s toughest missions to date, Queer Eye moves from the Big Apple to turn the Red States pink — one makeover at a time.”
Queer Eye for the Straight Guy became a surprise hit when it launched 14 years ago. While some initially criticised the show’s central premise for playing on gay stereotypes, it drew plaudits for its positive depiction of LGBT+ lives and supportive interactions between gay and straight men.
Gay media monitoring organisation GLAAD honoured the series with its Outstanding Reality Programme award in both 2004 and 2005, and the the show won the Emmy for Outstanding Reality Programme in 2004.
While Netflix will be introducing viewers to a new generation of fashion and lifestyle experts, rumours are swirling that the original ‘Fab Five’ could still be involved in the new series in some capacity.
