‘The OC’ is being turned into a musical

By Will Stroude

What’s the one sure-fire way to make a mid-noughties angst-filled teen drama even more appealing to the gays? Stick a few songs in it and throw it on stage!

Yep, a musical version of Californian dramedy The OC is in development, from the same producers who created a Cruel Intentions musical earlier this year (and provided us with this amazing reunion between Reese Witherspoon, Selma Blair and Sarah Michelle Gellar).

The show will be adapted and directed by Jordan Ross, produced by with Lindsey Rosin and run for one night only on August 30 in Los Angeles, Variety reports.

Apparently the parts of Luke Ward, Kirsten Cohen and series creator Josh Schwartz have already been cast, but Newport’s ‘Core Four’ – Ryan, Marissa, Seth and Summer – are still up for grabs.

The OC ran for four seasons between 2003 and 2007 on FOX, following the lives of a group of wealthy teens and their families in Southern California. The show helped launch the careers of Ben McKenzie, Mischa Barton, Adam Brody and Rachel Bilson – and co-starred TV and film stalwarts like Peter Gallager, Tate Donovan, Melinda Clarke and Alan Dale.

Frankly, if this musical version doesn’t feature Julie Cooper in a top hat singing All That Jazz, we don’t wanna know.
