Watch: Cher stuns with incredible Billboard Music Awards performance

By Ross Semple

Cher has single-handedly alleviated our Monday blues with an amazing, high-energy performance at the Billboard Music Awards.

The legendary artist took to the stage last night (May 21) to accept the Billboard Icon Award for her contribution to music.

Performing both ‘Believe’ and ‘If I Could Turn Back Time’, she brought the house down while serving some of her most iconic looks ever.

The vocals. The looks. The wigs. It may take several views to take in the full spectacle.

We aren’t alone in our worship. Last year’s Icon Award winner Celine Dion was seen getting her life to ‘Believe’ while she was meant to be giving interviews in the press room.

Presenting the award to Cher, Gwen Stefani called her “truly the definition of an icon.

“From the first note you know it’s her. Her artistry, her committment to her craft and her willingness to take on new creative challenges have served as an inspiration to me in my career and she continues to inspire”

Calling Cher a “trailblazer” and “a fashion trendsetter” who allows us to be true to ourselves, Stefani paid tribute to Cher’s decades of activism and humanitarian work.

In her acceptance speech, Cher told the audience that being a performer has always been her dream. “I’ve wanted to do what I do since I was four years old, and I’ve been doing it for 53 years. ”

The show took place one day after Cher’s 71st birthday, which she referenced in true Cher style: “I can do a five minute plank, just saying.”

Cher thanked her mother, who told her: “You’re not going to be the smartest, you’re not going to be the prettiest, you’re not going to be the most talented – but you’re going to be special.”

“I think luck has so much to do with my success. I think it was mostly luck and a little bit of something thrown in,” Cher said.

Among her achievements, Cher has won an Oscar, an Emmy, a Grammy, and three Golden Globes. She has the remarkable distinction of having a Billboard charting single in each of the last six decades.

Cher joins past Billboard Icon Award winners like Prince, Celine Dion, and Jennifer Lopez.
