Dame Shirley Bassey emotional after Le Gateau Chocolat wows with beautiful tribute performance
"Oh my God, thank you. It was so fabulous"
Le Gateau Chocolat wowed the audience of the Virgin Atlantic Attitude Awards, powered by Jaguar, by paying tribute to Dame Shirley Bassey.
Last night, the legendary singer, 86, took home the Honorary Gay Award, and was given quite the reception.
Moments prior, Le Gateau Chocolat, who picked up the Culture Award, belted out a spellbinding rendition of Dame Shirley’s iconic track ‘This Is My Life’.
The stripped back version allowed Le Gateau Chocolat to really move the audience, and showcase his incredible vocals.
Dame Shirley was then brought up on to stage to accept her award from Boy George, who described the singer as a “musical hero.”
He said: “Thank to Le Gateau Chocolat for that amazing performance.
“It is my honour to give this award to Dame Shirley Bassey, who is one of my absolute musical heroes. It is a total pleasure to hand this over to you,” Boy George said.
As she was given the gong, Dame Shirley said: “Don’t be jealous. Thank you so much Attitude for this wonderful honour.”
Pointing to Le Gateau Chocolat, clearly emotional, the ‘Goldfinger’ singer continued: “Don’t you ever sing that song again! Oh my God, thank you. It was so fabulous.”
She then went on to wow the crowd, by singing the phrase: “Divas are forever and ever… and ever.”
Dame Shirley was met with a huge standing ovation in the room after her iconic acceptance speech.
She has sold over 140 million records in a career spanning seven years. She is known for songs such as ‘I Who Have Nothing’ and ‘Goldfinger’.
