10 green-fingered celebs who’ll inspire you to get gardening
By Will Stroude
Growing stuff has never been so in fashion. Houseplant shops are springing up in most of the big cities, and clothing stores are replacing their racks of fashion with ferns! And, of course, celebs have been getting in on the act too. Or perhaps they’re just not keeping those dirty habits a secret anymore!
Here are 10 celebrities who’ve been seen showing their green fingers…
Julian Clary
Despite early reservations, Julian now enjoys the countryside, and is proud to continue the legacy of late English playwright Noel Coward’s garden at his 15th century Kent manor house. I can see that he has a particular penchant for Delphiniums and Peonies too, good choice Julian!
Kim Wilde
Perhaps one of the most intriguing transformations, 80’s pop star Kim Wilde shocked us all by re-emerging on Channel 4 as a gardening presenter in the late 90’s! She can often be spotted at the RHS Chelsea Flower Show, has written books and is an acclaimed garden designer.
Taylor Swift
Taylor gave gardening the biggest Instagram boost ever thanks to her series of posts about her vegetable patch! She has also been spotted in Insta Stories, showing off her parent’s fresh farm harvests!
Ellen Degeneres
I’m sure we all know the outdoor section on Ellen’s show, with ‘Nick the Gardener’. His sole purpose seems to be looking sexy and fit (and sometimes wet), rather than spreading any serious horticultural awareness…! But, hey, who’s complaining??
Baroness Floella Benjamin
Our childhood heroine and presenter of Play School, Floella is actually a fully fledged ambassador for the Royal Horticultural Society these days!
Dame Esther Rantzen
Esther Rantzen may have been known for odd-shaped vegetables on the show That’s Life, but at her home in the New Forest she has created a really wonderful wildflower-filled space, which is slightly choreographed yet appears natural!
Benedict Cumberbatch
The UK swooned when he was spotted on TV coverage of the 2014 RHS Chelsea Flower Show. However, it turned out Benedict wasn’t the gardener, he was merely treating his mother to a flowery day out!
Dame Patricia Routledge
It’s surprising that our ‘Hyacinth Bucket’ isn’t an actual Hyacinth, as she’s said to prefer Roses, and has been ‘papped’ at a major flower show giving them a sniff!
Gwyneth Paltrow
Actress and sometime entrepreneur Gwyneth’s Goop empire sells everything from fragrance to skincare and clothing, so it’s no surprise that she has recently extended that to gardening. She has come under fire for the retail price of her tools, however!
