Tom Daley only understood his sexuality after falling in love with Dustin
By Darren Mew
Tom Daley is one of the most well know LGBT athletes around. As well his Olympic medals, Tom is also an activist and role model for LGBT people around the world.
After publicly coming out in a video back in 2013, Tom Daley’s relationship with fiancé Dustin Lance Black has been the centre of public attention for years.
However, before meeting Dustin, Tom didn’t really understand his feelings towards men and women. Speaking about when he first became aware of his attractive to men, the olympic athlete said: ‘Initially, I thought it was “normal”, that that’s what everyone was like growing up. I thought maybe everyone was attracted to girls and to boys.”
‘But, as I got older, around 16, 17, 18 it was probably mainly sexual. Then when I met Lance, that was the trigger for thinking I could actually have feeling for someone.
‘That was the moment when I was like, “OK, this is real. This is what I’m going to have to deal with and to cope with.” But I was so lucky with the experience I had when I came out.’
Since coming out, Tom and Dustin Lance have got engaged, and although the wedding is still under wraps, the couple are still very much in love after celebrating Valentines Day with a cute ice cream date.
