Moonlight scoops Best Picture at Golden Globes

The gay coming of age film Moonlight was victorious at the Golden Globes last night, winning the night’s most coveted award: Best Picture – Drama.
The film was nominated in six categories, winning only one- though some might say the most important one, given the Globes are seen as a bellwether for how films perform throughout the awards season.
It is hoped that success for a film exploring gay sexuality will convince film studios that gay films aren’t niche- indeed they can be universal enough to warrant global acclaim.
After the #OscarsSoWhite fiasco during last year’s awards season, attempts have been made to be more culturally diverse this year, leading to an abundance of films that tackle issues not considered mainstream. Moonlight, focusing as it does on sexuality through the lens of black characters, is perhaps the perfect symbol of the success of art when it is allowed to diversify.
Written and directed by Barry Jenkins, the film explores the journey a gay black man takes as his burgeoning sexuality puts him at odds with his community.
Starring Trevante Rhodes as the adult iteration of a character who we see in three stages of his life- child, teenager and adult, the film sees him go through many phases most gay men would recognise: childhood bullying, tumultuous teen years, and tentative love.
The film has multiple nominations in various awards’ organisations for the film, its director, supporting actors and the screenplay, and Attitude will be rooting for it every step of the way.
